From Shizico Yi's Summer Bloom series, this painting sets blue against yellow in expressive, richly worked brushwork - built up with impasto, gesso, gold leaf and oil.
The series takes its visual language from Japanese woodblock print and calligraphy, reimagining Yi's own garden blooms in shades of blue, a colour she has been drawn to since childhood as one of the rarest in the natural world. Begun in 2022 and expanded each year since, the work is a study in contrast and harmony, and a quiet reflection on the relationship between artist, material and nature.
Details: Oil, acrylic and gesso on canvas, 40 × 30 × 1.5cm.
