Survivors deserve more than cold, empty rooms

At Furnishing Futures we make sure survivors of domestic abuse and their children can rebuild their lives in safe, dignified homes. Survivors fleeing abuse often arrive at their new home with nothing and are expected to start again in homes without even any flooring, beds, or basic appliances.

We’ve helped hundreds of women and children rebuild their lives by creating fully furnished, trauma-informed homes and providing holistic resettlement support. The women we support tell us this has helped them feel safe, reduced financial pressure, helped their children settle and in some cases it has literally saved their lives.

But the problem is bigger than any one organisation can tackle.

97% of social housing tenancies are unfurnished. The lack of support prevents victims from leaving and contributes to survivors returning to perpetrators, and this is unacceptable.

We believe this is a failure of public policy. And we believe it can be fixed.

The government should make it mandatory for every survivor to have access to a furnished tenancy.

The problem
Less than 3% of social housing tenancies in the UK are furnished.
More than a million children don't even have a bed.
Thousands of survivors of domestic abuse are rehoused each year into empty properties without flooring, white goods or essential furniture - increasing risk, trauma and the public cost.

Providing furnished homes will not end domestic abuse. But it will remove a powerful barrier to safety, reduce repeat harm, and prevent greater costs to the state.

Survivors deserve more than cold, empty rooms.

They deserve safety, dignity and the chance to start again.

Furnished homes save lives.
